Merced, California, incorporated in 1889, is the county seat of Merced County, located in San Joaquin Valley. With a population of 81,743, Merced is a sizeable Central Valley city acting as a governmental nerve center and economic hub for the agricultural valley. Commonly known as the 'Gateway to Yosemite' Merced is centrally located between the Sierra Mountainss and Monterey Bay at the Coast. Merced is named afte the Merced River which courses its way from Yosemite National Park through the city as a tributary to the San Joaquin River. In 2005, Merced became home to the latest University of California campus. Recreational activities in Merced include: Applegate Park and Zoo, numerous stage theatres including the historic Merced Theatre, and outdoor recreation at Yosemite Lake.
